Live Like a Local

Writer's picture: Out To Sea SplitOut To Sea Split

Coming to a new town and finding cheap but popular places isn’t always easy as Google, online forums and social media are filled with recommendations and you can never really know which are genuine or if specific places are being pushed due to monetisation or just generally being located well. Here we want to start a series on places that we know locals love, whether it be bakeries, cafes, bars, restaurants and even small hole-in-the-wall locations that you wouldn’t otherwise hear about unless you get that local knowledge.

Krafne Split Croatia

The Best local Bakery in Split

Krafne Kod Mate: sounds like a mouthful because it is if you don’t understand the language. This small bakery has been open for years and has stuck with the same recipe for as long as we have known it, also might I add they seem to almost never close, being open on weekends till 6am with lines literally down the street.

Lets start with their famous krafne (donuts) that come with a choice of three fillings; chocolate, vanilla and marmalade. Ranging from 1 - 1.50 Euro they are also amazingly great value for what you get. The filling is delicious (chocolate being our personal favourite) and the dough is super soft as you can see them being baked in the kitchen behind the counter. Any time of day or night is perfect timing to come and try one of these donuts and I can assure you, you will not be disappointed. If donuts aren’t your thing they also have plenty of other sweeter options like strudel cakes and pastries all with similar fillings, very basic but it works!

The second simple yet effective option they have are their pizzas, although relatively small they are under 5 Euro and made to order so you will have to wait a few minutes but we can definitely tell you it’s worth the wait. The ingredients are basic of what they have to offer but you’ll find that this is a very common trend across Split and Croatia as a whole, only recently has restaurant and fast food outlets opened up that veer away from their usual offerings of pizza, meat or pastry delicacies.

We would recommend Krafne Kod Mate to everyone as it’s only a short 7 or 8 minute walk from the centre of Split and so far in my personal travels I am yet to find a donut which tastes as amazing and are as generous with their fillings as this local hotspot is.
